Brady Tkachuk Cousin – Top Facts about Tom Fitzgerald

Thomas James Fitzgerald, or Tom Fitzgerald, famously known as the cousin to Keith Tkachuk‘ (father to Matthew, Taryn, and Brady), was born on the 28th day of August 1968. He is a retired American ice hockey player with a career spanning 17 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) and the American Hockey League (AHL). Fitzgerald and his cousin, fellow NHL player Keith Tkachuk, grew up together. Both are cousins to Kevin Hayes.

He now holds the positions of general manager and executive vice president with the New Jersey Devils. Fitzgerald achieved a significant career milestone by winning the Stanley Cup in 2009 while working as a director of player development for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Fitzgerald honed his hockey skills at Austin Preparatory School in Reading, Massachusetts, before playing at the collegiate level for Providence College. The New York Islanders drafted him in the first round, 17th overall, of the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. He began his professional career in 1988 with the Islanders’ AHL affiliate, the Springfield Indians. In 1990, Fitzgerald was instrumental in leading the Indians to a Calder Cup victory.

During his tenure with the Islanders, which spanned parts of five seasons, Fitzgerald achieved a unique feat in NHL playoff history by scoring two shorthanded goals during a single minor penalty against the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 2, 1993. This also tied the NHL record for shorthanded goals by a player in one game. He was then chosen by the Florida Panthers in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft.

Additionally, as a defensive forward in the NHL, he experienced his most productive scoring years in Miami, playing a pivotal role in the Panthers’ 1996 Stanley Cup run. Notably, in the 1995–96 playoffs, he scored a crucial goal in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins with a long-range slapshot that beat goaltender Tom Barrasso.

Furthermore, he briefly joined the Colorado Avalanche in 1998 before signing as a free agent with the Nashville Predators, who valued his experience and leadership. He was named the Predators’ first captain, a position he held for four seasons. His career also included stints with the Chicago Blackhawks and the Toronto Maple Leafs, with whom he signed a two-year contract on July 18, 2002. While in Toronto, both Fitzgerald and teammate Gary Roberts reached the milestone of playing their 1,000th career game on January 13, 2004.

In 2004, he signed with the Boston Bruins as a free agent. However, in July 2006, the Bruins opted not to renew his contract. Fitzgerald announced his retirement from professional hockey on September 12, 2006, after a noteworthy 17-season run in the NHL.

Tom is married to Kerry, and together, they have four sons: Ryan, Casey, Jack, and Brendan. Their son Ryan was selected in the fourth round, 120th overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins and currently plays for the Utica Comets, the AHL affiliate of the New Jersey Devils. Casey, drafted in the third round, 86th overall, by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, is now a player for the Florida Panthers. Both Ryan and Casey attended Boston College, where they were teammates from 2015 to 2017.
