Kesha Duhaney, who has Jamaican roots, was raised in Brooklyn, New York. Similar to Barrett Sr., she was a student-athlete and participated in track and field events at St. John’s University, which is where they met. Sportsnet reports that Duhaney excelled as an NCAA sprinter and long-jumper. Kesha Duhaney is the mother of two sons, RJ Barrett, who has pursued a career in the NBA, and Nathan Barrett.

Her family also boasts a strong athletic background; her parents were track competitors for the Jamaican national team. Her brother was a football player at the University of Maryland, and her sister, Dahlia Duhaney, was a sprinter who represented Jamaica at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. In 1991, Dahlia was part of the victorious 4 × 100 m relay team at the IAAF World Championships in Tokyo, as noted by the Athletic.
