In his high school years at Canoga Park High School, he played both basketball and football. He continued playing basketball at the college level, featuring for West Los Angeles College, Washington State, and Cal State Los Angeles and played one season of football at Long Beach City College.

His brief professional stint included playing as a tight end for the London Monarchs in the World League of American Football, where his achievements included 28 kickoff return yards but no receptions.

Additionally, the NBA star Ball encountered his future wife, Tina Slatinsky, while at Cal State Los Angeles, leading to their marriage in 1997. Together, they have three sons: Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo. Lonzo currently plays as a point guard for the Chicago Bulls, while LaMelo holds the same position with the Charlotte Hornets. Tina Ball, daughter of Robert and Catherine Slatinsky, was born on December 11, 1967, in Miami, Florida, and emerged as an exceptional basketball player during her high school years. She went to Alta Loma High School in California, where she earned varsity letters for four consecutive years.
